Kidney stone gallery

We’ve gathered a collection of kidney stone pictures in this photo gallery. The stones include small passed stones up to large staghorn stones. Stone composition (or type) is indicated when available.

multiple kidney stones

Multiple large smooth kidney stones removed percutaneously from a single kidney. Largest stone measures 1.2 cm in size. Analysis demonstrated 70% calcium oxalate monohydrate and 30% calcium phosphate.

small-kidney-stones

Multiple small kidney stones with the appearance of bird seed. Removed with ureteroscopy from a single kidney. Largest stone measured 4mm in size. Analysis demonstrated 85% calcium oxalate monohydrate and 15% calcium phosphate.

Photo of large bladder stones

File photo of large bladder stones removed by open incision. These have a “jackstone” appearance.

Photo of staghorn kidney stone

File photo of a large “staghorn” kidney stone removed intact by open surgery. The various parts of this stone fill up an entire kidney’s central collecting system, giving it a characteristic shape appearing similar to a deer’s antlers. Stones this size are not commonly seen intact anymore as most are now treated percutaneously and broken up before being removed.

Photo of staghorn kidney stone

You can’t pass those size stones at home. Nothing over 8mm will pass by it self

Amanda

I just passed a 7mm kidney stone pain free…..I give God all the glory! When I first went to E.R. I felt like I was having back labor pains and kept vomiting. I have had kidney stones before, but they were small and only caused slight aching in back. This has been my worst experience with a kidney stone and my largest one passed. I haven’t taken it in yet to see what kind it is so I can take preventative measures. I have been drinking lots of bottled water, cranberry juice, and cranberry capsules.

Best way for passing 4.4mm calculus in my right kidney

Zuhaib Ashfaq

I had bilateral nephrolithiasis. on the right side, the size was 19mm and on the left side, the size of the stone is 6mm..

I had the Stone on the right side removed on 27/08/2015 via PCNL surgical treatment. it’s a better method. i got a single stitch with a stent placed which was removed two days ago..
The stone was a bit in the complicated area and that’s why surgical removal was mandatory. Otherwise in India we have Ayurvedic treatment. The ayurvedic medicine is best for passing the stones on their own.. My aunt passed a 28mm stone using the Ayurvedic medicines.. Now for my 6mm stone, I’m going to do the same.. And believe me people, Ayurvedic medicines are highly effective in passing kidney stones. The doctors guarantee you that the stone would pass…

I collect biostones and would be interested in purchasing your kidney stones, gallstones, etc, for my private collection of medical items. Doctors allow you to keep the stones removed during surgery, so if you have any impressive stones for sale, please contact me!

I had CT scan Thursday for diverticulitis pain and they found a 1.5 cm kidney stone as well. Any chance they will leave it if there is not too much pain? Or must it be removed?

I am currently waiting for a large stone to be removed, 6 days to go, one doc in small town medicine!! Biggest I’ve ever had, 1.5cm by .9cm. Once they go over .5 cm, you will most likely not be able to pass them. “Surgery” doesn’t mean they are going to cut you open, and the only part that hurts is when they remove stents if you should need them. Its very important to find out what type of stones they are so you can work on preventing them.

SM

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy is a kidney stone surgery which in fact is cutting you open. I just had it done for a large stone.

You’re cut open, a tube in placed into your kidney, and the stone is removed. Afterward you are in pretty miserable pain for awhile.

i had a cystectomy last week and now have an ostomy. Today I found a small stone in my bag. I have saved it. Should I bring it to my doctor when I see him in ten days or have it evaluated sooner? No pain or visible blood in my urine. No previous experience with kidney stones.

Jill

I have a 10 cm stone that the Dr. says i have to go in to have removed. When he asked me how I felt I told him I feel like I am in labor(including feeling sick to my stomach). just waiting for the surgery schedule. No wonder my back aches

Michelle

I truly hope you mean 10mm, aka 1 cm.

neil

I have a 12mm stone which is giving me hell.A stent has been inserted now I have to wait for an empty bed. just love the pain KNOT.

Bonnie

I am a chronic stone creator, my Urologist told me to start drinking and cooking with Distilled Water, not any so called pure water, but Distilled Water.
Since I went to that water, and I did try others, my stones are passing with little pain.
I do not know if it will work for others, but it is worth the test.
I have passed up to 5mm in one stone with no pain, most of the time now they are accompanied by tiny gravel as well.
Hope this helps you, sorry for the pain, I know what it is like.

Sofiya

Thank you so much Bonnie! I hope you too feel a lot better. I am going to start using your advise immediately. Hope it will work and help me and others

Be well

I m having 1cm kidney stone of right sides. Is that large
in size.?? Kindly guide. I don’t want
to go with a surgery.

anonymous

1cm is very large and you need to have it removed surgically.

niche

I pass stones that are 9 cm.

Kelly

9cm?? Really?? That’s 3.5 inches. I can’t imagine anyone passing something like that. Do you mean 9mm?

Ben

HI,
I have dissolved a 4cm stone down to nothing and a 1cm stone although large can be dissolved. This is of course depending on you and what type of stone you have and how strict you can be in drinking tons of water and alkalizing your urine to increase the PH high enough for type of stone you have.
Email me privately and I will help you if you have not already done surgery. If you are pain or have seen a doctor who has advised you, you should listen to them first but I would be happy to suggest how to dissolve your stone.

Bianca

Hi how can i disolved?

Benjamin Christensen

I have a .7 x .6 x .5 stone what do you suggest to disolve it?
Thank you,
Ben

Patricia

When my pain came on Monday within 1 hour it was so intense I called my dad to drive me to the doctor. As we drove he asked me symptoms and he decided I needed to go to ER. I couldn’t believe how excruciating the pain was! I sat in the ER waiting room for 8 hours and by the time I got into the room my pain level was a 20 at least. CT showed a 4mm, they gave me morphine, tramadol and then another dose of morphine. That was 2 days ago and now I’m in pain again, but not unbearable…yet. They gave me a script of hydrocodone and Flomax but didn’t mention the pain would be recurring in the back and sides. I’ve been passing little specs, I urinate through a filter to catch the stone which made me think I will pass it within a week, however reading comments it sounds like it could be much longer? I’m going to try the Stone Free and Hydrangea that Laura recommended. Should I go ahead and take the Flomax with this combo? This is crazy, I hope I never get another one!

Patricia, if you haven’t read on the net it has been scientifically studied and determined that you can reduce your chance of reoccurring stones by taking 500 mgs. Of magnesium a day, it reduces the chances by a whopping 90%. Add b6 and I believe the number goes up to 94%.

Ben

Skip,
in what way does taking Magnesium help with avoiding stones and which ones? I form Cystine stones so this could be different.

I had kidney stones as shape of a marbles, it’s always irretates me. What should I do? Pls help me .

Laura

My kidneys are over half full of stones. I have to pass them naturally. If I have a procedure to have the removed my body will go into toxic shock. I did discover that there is a couple of pills you can take that make it easy and painless to pass the stones one is called Stone Free for kidney and gallbladder and a the other is hydrangea. An old man at a health food store told me about it he was probably in his nineties and he came up to me and asked me what was wrong and I told him I’m gonna die I have kidney stones. He said no you’re not and brought me these two bottles and said take this with this. I took them before I left the parking lot and by the time I got home the pain was gone and I started passing the stones easily.

Ben

Hi Laura,

What type of stones do you have? did taking stonefree and hydragena get rid of all your stones?

Please email me offline as well.
Ben

Blessing to all and empathy of your similar pain. Being a type 2diabetic and on insulin, I had surgery to remove a 10 mm kidney stone. The surgery was successful but doctor had to break up the kidney stone which was blocking my left kidney and was blocking my urethra. Doctors were not able to capture the stone. Present day, July 5th, I passed another kidney stone and was able to capture it. My wife is a medical assistant and took the stone to UH lab after I contacted my urologist, endocrinologist, and primary doctor. Tomorrow, I have an doctor’s appointment with
endocrinologist. I am still feeling terrible and in pain..

Laura

Get a bottle of Stone Free for kidney and gallbladder and a bottle of hydrangea. The combination of these two make it easy and painless to pass the stones.

I am having 4mm n 7 mm kidney stone and having huge pain in back while lying down. Some time having mild fever. Does this can be passed through urine. Or need to have surgery. Kindly guide. Although I don’t want to go with surgery

mark

I passed a same sized stone as that, after several days at hospital on opiates, the pain subsided and I felt an urgent sensation similar to per ejaculation, then the stone appeared from the eye of my penis whislt peeing,it was easy to pull out and was the shape of a pencil point.I have had stones for 30yrs,I won’t lie, nothing comes close to this pain,or lasts as long.Indocid suppositories 100mg work better than any other drugs.they are a NSIAD,so no doping or constipation side effects.Just got home from having a stent in,8.4mmstone this time, back for laser blasting in 2 to six weeks.Lucky I live in Australia as this is all free to me,Mark,MAY YOUR PAIN PASS QUICKLY

Preeti

pradeep

my left kidney 5mm stone very hard pain

Janet

Had Lithotripsy May 27 & haven’t passed stones yet. Is this common? Straining everything but don’t see what I think is a stone.

Shirley

Janet. I was in your condition for a period of six weeks, with a drain tube inserted through my back, which drained the affected kidney into a bag strapped to my leg. I strained for stones….nothing. After six weeks, I contacted Dr. Braggin at the Good Samaratan Hospital in LA. who determined a 1/2″ stone was blocking the kidney. He performed a laser ‘basket extraction’ on that stone (& on a 4 mm stone) which completely solved my problems. The procedure lasted 1.5 hours. I went home feeling great, with a stint between my kidney & bladder….10 days later that was removed. Et voila! Issue resolved. Call Braggin!

Alan

I have passed at least 200 kidney stones in the last 20 years. Tonight I passed on that was 1/2″ in diameter along with 4 small ones. Last week I passed one over 1/4″ in diameter. Doctors have figured out through test mine are being caused by my para thyroid producing to much calcium. They will perform a surgery to correct the problem.

SANDY L.

I HAD THE PARA THYROID SURGERY LAST AUG. THIS WED I AM HAVING SURGERY TO REMOVE A 9MM KIDNEY STONE , WHICH I CONSIDER A ROCK, NOT A STONE..LOL MY ULOLIGIST AND ENDOCRONOLOGIST ARE GONNA BE SPEAKING TO ONE ANOTHER. GOOD LUCK!

kimmi

I have hyperparathyroidism as Mary Ellen described. One of the parathyroid glands is making my calcium levels too high. I just passed an 8mm stone last night after 11.5 hours of pure discomfort and 3 hours of a near death experience and nearly overdosing myself at home. I passed out from the medication and when I woke up it just passed and we’ve been celebrating ever since. Ironically we were scheduled for surgery 2 days ago but I fell ill to a viral infection and had to reschedule.

SANDY L.

SORRY U WERE IN SUCH PAIN. MY STONE(ROCK) IS 9MM. I AM HAVING SURGERY WED. WISH I COULD PASS MINE , EVEN WITH THE PAIN. HAPPY U R PAIN -FREE

Sandy studies show 500 mgs of magnesium per day reduce chances of reoccurring stones by 90%.
