Letting a kidney stone pass

Many kidney stones will pass spontaneously and will not require surgical treatment. Whether a stone can pass successfully primarily depends on the size of the stone. Based on several studies of stone patients, a size criteria of 5mm  or less (about 0.2 inches) is generally felt to predict a reasonable chance (50-70%) for spontaneous passage.

The location of a kidney stone when it is diagnosed also is predictive of likely success at spontaneous passage. Stones that are more distal (closer to the bladder) are more likely to pass than stones that are more proximal (closer to the kidneys).

Take a look at our infographic below to estimate the chances of passing a stone based on its location and size.

The decision to allow a stone to pass spontaneously will also take in account the amount of pain you are experiencing, your medical health, the possibility of infection, and other factors. Typically, a period of 4-6 weeks is allowed to give stones a chance to pass.

Medications to help pass kidney stones are now more commonly being given to patients experiencing an active stone episode. These medications can improve the chances of successful passage of a stone, decrease the pain associated with a stone episode, and decrease the time required for passage.

I have passed well over a hundred kidney stones over the past 50 years. They are calcium oxalate and have ranged in size from 5mm to 22mm. My ureters are significantly stretched out over years of passing these and I can usually pass larger (10mm-18mm) stones on my own. However, when a stone is too large or is stuck, it must be removed. I’ve tried many of these crazy “natural” remedies and goofy concoctions, and for the most part, they’re worthless. Here’s what does work: drink tons of water and other fluids all the time, more than you think you need. Your urine should always be clear, not yellow. The yellower the urine, the more water you need to drink. If you find the pain lasts over a few weeks or is intolerable, go to a urologist and get your imaging done. Ultrasounds to see blockages and x-rays (KUB) to ascertain size and location. If necessary, your doctor will perform a cystoscopy to remove/laser the stone(s) and insert stents to keep your kidneys draining. Do not wait if your urine is bloody, smells funky, or if the pain has you crawling or rocking or vomiting. These are signs, do not ignore them. Blocked stones cause hydronephrosis in your kidneys, which can lead to very serious issues like sepsis. Extreme kidney stone pain is G-d’s way of telling you “Go see a doctor NOW.” I can say from experience, kidney stone treatment and removal has come light years from where it was 50 years ago. Drink water, take your painkillers, and find yourself a good urology practice with doctors you trust. And remember, this too shall pass.

I have 8.5mm calcium oxalate kidney stone in my left kidney. The doctor said that I will undergo shock wave lithrotripsy. I drank water (2-3 liters) every day for about 1 week and miraculously, I passed the stone.

I am reading all your messages here lying in the hospital in bed and I am quite surprised how you manage to live and accept the pain and trying to heal on alternative medicine.
I got last Sunday/Monday night a pin attack that I felt the pain going from my right side to my back, heart, testicels and abdomen. Started crawling on the floor. Walking. Lying
on the floor, the bed.. didn’t know what to do. Didn’t know what was happening.. assumed maybe because of to much soy proteins that I ate late in the evening. Felt a sleep again and the next day drunk loads of water.

And then it came back again Tuesday/Wednesday, but now the pain was even bigger. Insane. Ended up in hospital. Got a shot of penicillin after 30 minutes morphine. Before all that they made a X-ray and said there is a stone of 3cm in my kidney. They told me to drink water and take diclofenac if needed. 4 hrs after morphine I took already diclofenac.
The next day, today, I started feeling slightly pain so I took a pill. After an hour a second one. After an hour again the pain was only more increasing. Again with ambulance to hospital but now a private one (I live in Thailand). Here they made ct-scan and have a feedback that I have a stone 8mm which is in the urethra 5cm and still 20 to go. The gave me a shot of Pethedine (nonpain for hours now, so happy).
They want to remove it Saturday morning by entering the penis.

A friend, acupuncturist and Chinese medicine practitioner offered to help me that way. But the pain is insane not to be under pain killers.

When I think I have been crawling on the floor, people who saw me said my face became green..

Wondering how some of you manage not to go to hospital and remove?
I am never sick. Never problems. Avoid doctors and hospitals. Rely on alternative medicine. But this is just insane.

Don’t wish anyone to experience this.

I’m 56 yr old man have had kidney stones for 25-30 years normally pas1-2 stones per year. The reason I form stones is that I often go hours or sometime a full day without urinating. When I drink lots of water and go to bathroom frequently I don’t get stones. Fortunately I’ve always been able to pass them

My cousin has a 7mm stone. Its a great trouble to her. So is there chances that the stone will pass?

Ruth

I doubt it was will pass on its own. I currently have an 8 mm in my left kidney and a 22 mm in my right. Both are going to require separate procedures. I have two stents in while I’m waiting.

Anantha

Hello please guide me,

I have gone through USG test, dictated 8 mm stone in my in left Vesicoureteric junction.
So, do need to go for any surgery and will I able to passed it?
Please help!!!

Ruth

You probably will need a stent out in and ultrasound blasting to break it up. I’m going through this right now and it’s no fun.

parag patidar

no dear you are not required to go through any surgery just follow some rules :
1 don’t eat food having calcium
2 drink only mineral water
3 drink water as much as you can
4 don’t go for coldrinks , non veg (meat egg chicken)
5 drink raw apple cider vinegar for 1 month daily 5 times a day

No Way Jose

“drink raw apple cider vinegar for 1 month daily 5 times a day” — This is a joke, folks!

It CAN pass. drink lots and lots of water and don’t be afraid to add some beer or wine.. If you can, ask the dr. for flomax. I passed larger ones than that….

Christine

Why are you suggesting beer or wine that makes your few more acidic which causes the problem for the stone as well

Kamya mitra

I am having a 5.3mm stone in mid polar region of right kidney since last 1.4 yrs. 1 yr back I had reddish urine which bring me into notice about The stone. Ufologist done CT scan and all tests and said it will pass automatically.

After that no pain for 1 yr and now I have a BP of 100/180 and while doing USG, I found the stone is still there. Dr. Said all complication is because of that stone.

Can anyone tell me why the stone not passed even after drinking around 5L water a day and low on oily foods.

Also do stones increase BP and liver fat?

Donnan

2 years ago I had my first kidney stone. 8 mm. 2 weeks later had a uterescopy with a stent. After surgery it felt like I was pissing razor blades. Horrible pain. The stent was brutal. I made the doctor remove it after a week. Removal was in the office and although it was quick, having a nurse shove a camera up your dick wasn’t fun. Hurt like hell for 10 seconds then was okay. An hour later had horrible flank pain. Next day was good as new.
About a month ago was on a flight and felt that familiar flank pain. Toughed it out for a few days and finally went to ER. CT scan revealed a 4mm stone. Followed up with urologist and wanted to do another procedure. I said the hell with that and drank water like crazy and took a herbal supplement called stone breaker. 4 weeks later stone passed with hardly any pain. I didn’t even expect it to pass. Just went to the bathroom one morning and there she was.
My advise…don’t rush to do a procedure. If you can deal with that initial pain and you have a stone under 5mm let nature take its course.

Sonia

I have a 7 mm stone in my bladder and wondering if can be pass out easily or not ?
Thank you
Sonia

kaitoko

Yes you can. I had a 2cm stone and 1cm and i was about to do a Lithotripsy.A year ago i did a CT scan and it shows the stones the doctor advice me to wait after 6 mos. But, last 2 weeks ago i had a very pain and i felt there’s something stones that blocked my pee. Luckily, the stones pass which my doctor is impossible to pee. Im just so lucky and now im Free in pain and urine infection.

BTW, i only used to drink a Vita Coco juice which i think it helps me a lot.

Ahmed F

Hope you have passed so far, if not write your present condition because it depends on your patience. If you can bare it with out any other health related
Issues. Then you will pass it.
Drink lemon juice. This is how I tackled without any procedure.
Before I have passed 10 mm plus. For me I wanted to avoid heavy expenses of treatment.

I drink plenty of water.

If stone is interrupting in urinating the consult urologist

My mother has a 6.7mm stone stuck in her ureter and it’s causing severe pain…. My question is that “Will the stone pass naturally or not??”

Bbrownie

That’s right in the “maybe”range. It can be passed – I passed an 8mm a few months ago and a 4mm yesterday.

It can be done but you cannot be sure- it depends on the shape and if she can handle the possible pain associated in passing it. First off, if it’s near the kidney – that’s hard because it’s got a our no way to go. If it’s in the bladder, it’s a bit better but that’s where you really have to drink and hope it makes its way down.

At 6mm- you moms age is a factor. Passing a stone isn’t a passive thing, she might be better off doing the laser surgery so she isn’t in pain and you have a definite timeline for recovery- 10 days or so.

If you attempt to pass it naturally, it might be months.

Eric

Hey Bbrownie, i have a 6.4mm stone in my right kidney right now as i speak. With my pain meds I’m not in much pain at all. I take ibuprofen 800 and narco 5. I’m just curious what all did u do to pass a 8mm stone cause that’s incredible and i would love to follow your daily routine to pass my 6.4mm. Cause if u can pass an 8mm stone then i for damn sure should be able to pass a 6.4mm stone. Thanks in advance!

kaitoko

yes you can..drink a fresh coco juice or vita coco a lot. just make sure she can stand the pain no matter how pain it is…

believe it or not my kidney stone is about 2cm which my doctor told me is impossible for me to pass yet i did…only coco juice no any medicine or pain reliever at all….im healed naturally..

Sarah

How much did you drink a day of the coco juice?

CharlesB

I’ve had a 6.5 mm for since it left my kidney on January 2 (over 5 mos. ago). After tracking it with x-rays all the way down to my bladder, they lost it and as of today believe it is in my prostate or urethra. Apparently when it reaches the bladder you’re typically home free, but mine seems to have gotten hung up. This has resulted in severe burning and pain during urination for past 4 days, and yesterday a small piece (2 x 1 mm) came out. My urologist thinks his time to go look and clear it out, but I’m wondering what I could do to potentially get it to pass. Thanks for any suggestions?

Anna

I had a stone that size and I did three sessions of acupuncture and a course of Chinese herbs. No pain!
